There is no better way to learn about robots and development than building and programming your own things. The Chip-E is a 3D printed Arduino robot from RobotGeek. As this video shows, you can combine it with a Google Home, IFTTT, a WiFi enabled microcontroller to control it via voice commands.

You are going to need a Chip-E,  SparkFun ESP8266 Thing Dev Board, Google Home, 2 x 10-in female headers, and a few other parts to get started.
